Men's Soccer Squad To Play Seven Games In 12 Days On Costa Rica Tour

Aug. 12, 2002

The Oregon State men's soccer team, under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Dana Taylor, will embark on a 12-day tour of Costa Rica on Aug. 15. The team is slated to play seven matches on the trip against professional Costa Rican teams and one against Costa Rica's U-20 National Team.

The Beavers will field a First and Second Team; the First Team plays four matches and the second has three.

OSU's First Team begins its slate the day after the team's arrival in San Carlos with a match against Heredia on Aug. 16. They continue with a match on Aug. 18 against Saprissa, followed by contests with the U-20 Costa Rican National Team on Aug. 21 and Puntarenas on Aug. 24.

The Second Team plays Saprissa Aug. 18, San Carlos Aug. 20, and Alajuela's U-20 national champion on Aug. 25.

Taylor saw the trip as an opportunity to reward his seniors while at the same time jump-starting the season.

'This is my first class that I recruited, and they're now seniors,' Taylor said. 'I wanted to do something special for them to reward them for coming here in the first place and starting the program. This is for the players.'

Oregon State will use the time in Costa Rica to find out how its recruiting class - ranked 20th in the nation by College Soccer News - will fit into the picture this year.

'It gives us a good step in the right direction as far as getting ahead of the competition and getting our team together,' Taylor said. 'We feel that the extra 10 days will be very beneficial.

'The final thing is that the game schedule itself is pretty intense. All the teams we're playing are professional teams as well as a national team. That will do two things - it will show us our weaknesses, but it will also show us what we do well. It will be a fun time and an exceptional experience. It definitely helps the program.'

Oregon State comes off an injury-filled 5-12 season a year ago, but returns nine starters and 15 letterwinners, including three All-Pac-10 players. The Beavers return from Costa Rica Aug. 26 - four days prior to their opener at rival Gonzaga on Aug. 30.
