Day One U.S. National Championships Results

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - - Junior Natalie Coughlin won the women's 100-meter fly event at the U.S. National Championships with a top time of 58.49. Coughlin, along with several other swimmers from the University of California, is participating in the championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida this week.
The event, which takes place from August 12-17, is used as a consideration for team selection to such events as the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships, 2003 World Championships and 2003 World University and Pan American Games.
In Monday's opening events, Coughlin edged out 10-time Olympic medalist Jenny Thompson in the 100 fly. With the win she qualifies for the Pan Pacific Championships in Yokohama, Japan later this month. Coughlin also placed in the 400-meter free relay, along with Danielle Becks, Staciana Stitts and Haley Cope, as the team finished fourth with a time of 3:48.79. Becks and Stitts are current Golden Bear swimmers, while Cope is a former swimming standout for Cal.
On the men's side, Golden Bear John Dorr swam with his San Ramon club team and finished 10th in the 400-meter free relay.
Tuesday's events include the men's and women's 100-meter breast, men's and women's 100-meter back, the women's 400-meter free and 200-meter IM and the men's 200-meter free. Stitts will compete in the 100-meter breast event, while Coughlin and Cope are slated for the 100-meter back.
