Sell Named Assistant Coach for Women's Tennis Team
Aug. 14, 2002
EUGENE, Ore. - Kathryn Sell, a 2001 All-American at Duke University, will serve as an assistant coach for the University of Oregon's women's tennis team beginning this fall. New head coach Nils Schyllander and Sell will look to build on the success of last year's team, whose No. 33 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll is the highest ranking in the history of the program.
'I'm very excited to have Kathy on board,' Schyllander said. 'She has played at the level that we want this program to get to.'
Sell brings a wealth of playing experience to Oregon's tennis team as she significantly contributed to Duke's success during her collegiate career. She was team captain her junior and senior seasons, when her team was ranked No. 2 in the country. As a freshman, Sell played on the NCAA runner-up team. On an individual level, Sell ranked as high as No. 7 in singles play during her senior campaign. Along with the All-American honor she earned in 2001, Sell was a nominee for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Sell also became the first female recipient of Duke's Athlete of the Year Award.
'Her playing experience will be an invaluable asset to the team,' Schyllander said.
Following her graduation, Sell served as a member of Duke's athletic advisory board as well as its women's scholarship funding committee. Sell will join the tennis staff following a stint as a tennis pro at West Hills Racquet Club in Portland.
