Vendt Finals Again At U.S. Nationals

USC senior Erik Vendt finished fifth in the 200m breast, sophomore Kaitlin Sandeno was sixth in the 200m fly while former Trojan Lindsay Benko took her second consecutive second-place at the 2002 Summer Nationals on Wednesday (Aug. 14) in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Vendt, second in the 400m free on Monday, was fifth in the 200m breast in 2:15.00. He'll get his next chance for a title on Thursday in the 400m IM.

Sandeno, in her first final of the meet, swam a 2:13.04 for her sixth in the 200m fly.

Benko, second in the 400m free on Tuesday, finished second behind Natalie Coughlin by less than half of a second. Benko led for the first 150 meters but was passed on the final lap by Coughlin. Benko touched the pad in 1:58.56, a split second after Coughlin won in 1:58.20.

Four Trojans earned second swims in the 200m fly. Junior Mike Gausman, senior Jeff Lee and junior John Abercrombie finished 10th (2:01.23), 12th (2:01.67) and 16th (2:03.63), respectively, in the consolation finals. In addition, senior David Ringe was 24th (2:03.42) after swimming in the bonus final.

Junior Jana Krohn also made it to the consolation finals of the 200m fly, taking 12th in 2:14.70.
