Arizona Football Training Camp Notes

Aug. 16, 2002

Head Coach John Mackovic's remarks following Thursday's evening scrimmage...

On the team's progress after six days into training camp:'We needed some full-speed work, and it gets to the point where the players need that kind of contact. Now, we have to continue to move forward and begin building our endurance for an actual game situation. Saturday we'll get into longer drives, so that will be the next step in doing that.'

'The defense did a good job of getting to the ball, but the offense did not run the ball well enough in tough situations like we needed to. I was very disappointed that we had a field goal blocked. While I was encouraged by the blocker, I was not happy that someone was able to penetrate a gap and block the kick.'

On Arizona's quarterbacks:'Right now, Jason (Johnson) is getting about half of the reps, while Nic (Costa) and Ryan (O'Hara) are each getting about 25 percent. Even though Ryan is not getting very many reps, I have been encouraged by everything he does in practice.'

On junior wide receiver Andrae Thurman:'Andrae really has had a good training camp. For three days, he ran through the coverage, and we never threw him the ball. But, he kept running and running, and now the balls are coming to him. After Bobby (Wade), he is the guy who has to step up and fill the roles of Malosi Leonard and Brandon Marshall, and he has shown that he is better prepared to do that at this point.'

On redshirt freshman running back Mike Bell:'Mike Bell really showed his explosiveness. He showed that he can take a good hit and run hard inside. He also showed that when he gets a crease, he can make guys miss and turn those into some big plays.'
