Leinart Throws 3 TDs, Colbert Catches 2, Davis Hits 3 Field Goals In Intrasquad Game

Aug. 17, 2002

LOS ANGELES-Matt Leinart threw 3 touchdown passes and ran for another score, Keary Colbert caught 2 TDs and David Davis hit 3 field goals to highlight a 63-play intrasquad scrimmage that wrapped up the first week of USC's pre-season practice at Howard Jones Field on campus on Saturday (Aug. 17).

Leinart connected with 3 different wide receivers on his TDs. He hit Colbert for a 32-yarder, then threw 17 yards to Jason Mitchell and 19 yards to Grant Mattos. Leinart also scrambled for a 4-yard TD.

Leinart, a redshirt freshman, was 5-of-9 passing for 97 yards. He is battling with sophomore Matt Cassel for the backup quarterback spot behind Carson Palmer. Cassel hurt his knee early in the scrimmage after taking just 5 snaps. The severity of Cassel's injury has yet to be determined, although he stood and watched the remainder of the scrimmage from the sideline.

Palmer, USC's No. 3 career passer, was also 5-of-9 passing, throwing for 88 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown to Colbert. He also threw an interception.

Colbert (73 yards) and Mattos (44 yards) each had 3 catches. USC's receivers, however, dropped 5 passes.

Davis hit field goals of 44, 41 and 30 yards, missing only on a 45-yarder. He also nailed all 4 of his PATs.

The Trojan ground attack gained just 62 yards, but was without key tailbacks Justin Fargas and Sultan McCullough, who were held out while nursing slight hamstring pulls.

Defensive tackle Mike Patterson had 5 tackles, while linebackers Aaron Graham and Oscar Lua and tackles Bernard Riley and Spencer Torgan each notched 3 tackles. Safeties Jason Leach and Andre Woodert each had an interception.

'I thought it was a good scrimmage,' said second-year USC head coach Pete Carroll. 'We were real physical and had good intensity. The tackling was crisp. I saw some playmakers out there today. So, all in all, it was a very successful first scrimmage.'

The Trojans, ranked 20th in the pre-season AP poll, open the 2002 season on Sept. 2 in the Coliseum against Auburn.
