Cardinal Pick Up Two Victories In Europe

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's soccer team defeated V.V. Braakhuizen, the Dutch Champions, 6-0 on Saturday and the Belgium Club Champions, Eendracht Aalst, 4-0 on Monday evening in the team's preseason tour through Holland, Germany and Belgium.

In the first match against the Dutch Champions, the Cardinal scored two quick goals before halftime. Sophomore Amy Grady (Pawcatuck, CT) assisted Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) off a free kick. Freshman Leah Tapscott (Madison , WI) took a pass from Katherine Harrington (Fort Worth, TX), who then headed it in for a 2-0 lead.

Stanford then rattled off four more goals in the second half, including two by junior Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA). Megan Alderete (Riverside, CA) assisted Ward in the 69th minute, while Katie Wayland (Concord, MA) was credited with the assist on Ward's second goal to put the Cardinal up 4-0. In the 80th minute Ward and Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) assisted freshman Jennifer Farenbaugh (Reseda, CA), who found the back of the net. Wayland completed Stanford's scoring off a pass from Grady to give Stanford to the 6-0 victory.

The Cardinal continued their shutout run by blanking the Belgium Club team 4-0. Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) put Stanford on the board first with a goal in the 13th minute off assists from Lisa Engel (Ventura, CA) and Farenbaugh.

Oliveira opened up the Cardinal's scoring in the second half in the 56th minute. Three minutes later Grady sent a pass to Carlson, who put the ball away for a 3-0 lead. Grady then recorded her second assist of the game on Oliveira's goal in the 76th minute giving Stanford the 4-0 win.

The Cardinal will play Rapide Wezemaal, the Belgian National Champions, tomorrow and then battle the Dutch National Team on Thursday.
