Mattos And Byrd Score Touchdowns In USC Intrasquad Scrimmage
Aug. 19, 2002
LOS ANGELES-USC wide receiver Grant Mattos caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carson Palmer on the first drive of USC's 84-play intrasquad scrimmage and fullback Sunny Byrd, running out of the tailback spot, ran 4 yards for the scrimmage's only other TD on Monday (Aug. 19) in the Coliseum as the Trojans began their second week of pre-season practice.
Placekicker David Davis ended the scrimmage with a 35-yard field goal.
The Trojans, who played with only 2 healthy tailbacks (Malaefou MacKenzie and Hershel Dennis), ran for just 47 yards on 32 attempts. Tailbacks Justin Fargas, Sultan McCullough and Darryl Poston were held out while hampered by slight hamstring pulls.
Freshman wide receiver Mike Williams had a game-best 4 catches for 72 yards, while Mattos added 3 grabs for 63 yards.
Freshman punter Tom Malone averaged 44.3 yards on 4 punts, with a 50-yarder.
Safety Mike Ross and cornerback Forrest Mozart each had 5 tackles, while safety Kyle Matthews added 4. Matthews, linebacker Oscar Lua and cornerback Alex Gomez each had an interception. The Trojan defense had 7 sacks for minus 42 yards, with defensive tackle Shaun Cody getting 2 for 10 yards.
'We got in some good work today in the Coliseum and nobody got hurt,' said second-year USC head coach Pete Carroll. 'We knew coming in that we were going to throw the football a lot and run sparingly. Now, we need to have a really good week of work. It's a race to the finish to get everything tightened up and sharp.'
The Trojans, ranked 20th in the pre-season AP poll, open the 2002 season on Sept. 2 in the Coliseum against Auburn.
