Offense Comes Alive In Second Scrimmage

Aug. 21, 2002

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Senior quarterback Jason Gesser connected on 10 of 16 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns in Washington State's second scrimmage of fall camp Wednesday afternoon.

Gesser threw touchdown passes to freshman tight end Troy Bienemann and senior receiver Mike Bush from one and 20 yards out, respectively. Wednesday's performance was encouraging for the offense after a sub-par outing in last Saturday's scrimmage.

'If we play like we did today, we'll be in good shape (for the opener). We played pretty good today,' Cougar Head Coach Mike Price said. 'There wasn't too many sacks. I thought our protection was good. Our protection has been pretty good all fall.'

Freshman Chris Hurd stepped into the role of second string quarterback with Matt Kegel sitting out, and was impressive. Hurd completed 7 of 11 attempts for 76 yards, including a 33-yard scoring strike to junior college transfer Sammy Moore.

Senior receiver Jerome Riley and sophomore Devard Darling combined for 6 catches and 121 yards, but did not score.

The defense was not completely outshined, however. Defensive linemen Steve Cook, Tomasi Kongaika, and Adam Braidwood tallied three sacks for a loss of 24 yards. Freshman Eric Frampton picked off Josh Swogger and returned it 13 yards.

'The defense probably backed off a little. We are a blitz and gambling team,' Price said. 'When we get going we are hard to stop on defense too.'

The Cougars will hold their final fall scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 24 at 2:00 p.m.

'I hope Saturday's scrimmage will be as intense, but we won't tackle. It is touch-off, thud-off,' Price said. 'We'll go through pre-game, we'll have cheerleaders, music, make it look like a game. We'll signal from the sidelines and use the 25-second play clock. There's a lot yet to be done. I'm just glad we are not playing right now. We'll probably have about 60 plays.

'The focus begins soon for Nevada. We did some goal line against their defense. All the emphasis is on Nevada now.'

The Cougars will play Nevada Aug. 31 in the first collegiate game in the new Seattle Seahawks Stadium.
