Quotes from Dennis Erickson and Statistics from the Final Fall Scrimmage

Aug. 21, 2002

Corvallis, Ore. - 'This was a little different scrimmage than we would normally have the week before the first game. We put the first unit offense against the first unit defense in game scenarios, but it wasn't a live situation. We didn't scrimmage our number one defense, because I didn't feel we had to. We than ran our number one offense against the number two defense, and the number two offense versus the number three defense - I thought that went well, it was the best we have moved the ball all fall. It was a good scrimmage; we got a lot of things done.

We had a lot of kicking opportunities today and that's important, we haven't made a decision on who our top kicker is as of yet - that's why we have put them in those situations. Whoever is the most consistent over the next several days is the person who is going to kick Thursday.

(Lack of first team defense playing)The way things have gone this fall, we felt we needed more time to scrimmage our first two offenses, our first unit defense really doesn't need the work.

(James Newson not playing much)James has a pulled muscle; I just didn't want to use him. He could have played today, but there really wasn't a reason for him to do so. Steven Jackson didn't get a lot of plays today as well -- I'm more concerned on who are second and third running backs are going to be.

(Overall Assessment)Until you play an opponent it's hard to tell where you are as a team. I do like where we are defensively, we have a chance to be darn good on that side of ball. Offensively, we have improved everyday in camp and I expect we'll continue to get better and better all the time.

(Kickers)If you look at the percentages, Kirk Yliniemi was by far the better kicker today. We'll make a decision next week, we have kept statistics of how Kirk and Ryan (Cesca) have kicked in game situations in practice, and we'll continue to put them in those types of situations the rest of this week and the first part of next week.

(Injuries)We're actually fairly healthy, with the exception of losing Dan Rothwell and Henry Anderson most likely for the year. I think we're in pretty good shape overall.'
