Aug. 22, 2002
BERKELEY - No. 15 California opened the 2002 campaign with a 4-0 exhibition win over San Francisco at Edwards Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Kassie Doubrava opened the scoring for the Golden Bears in the 26th minute, blasting a 22-yard unassisted shot past USF's diving goalkeeper Stephanie Beall.
Cal took a 1-0 lead into the locker room and erupted for three second-half goals. Forward Dania Cabello, the only freshman to start for the Bears, scored on a header in the 67th minute. Junior midfielder Kim Yokers took a corner kick from the right side, and senior defender Lucy Brining headed the ball to Cabello, who finished the chance.
Hamm put the icing on the win by converting on a long unassisted run up the left flank in the 83rd minute.
All 24 of Cal's dressed athletes saw minutes in today's contest. Only Yokers, a U.S. under-21 national team player, went the distance for the Bears. Redshirt junior Sani Post and senior Lee Ann Morton each played a half in goal.
The Bears open the regular season Labor Day Weekend as host of the Cal Invitational. Saint Mary's faces Purdue in the first game of the tournament Friday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium, followed by Cal vs. Ohio State at 4:30 p.m.
