Shantay Legans to Transfer from Cal

Aug. 23, 2002

BERKELEY - Point guard Shantay Legans has informed Cal head coach Ben Braun that he plans to transfer from Cal and intends to enroll at Fresno State.

'Shantay has been an integral part of our program,' Braun said. 'However, he has expressed a desire to play at Fresno State for Ray Lopes, with whom he has had a long-term relationship. I have requested that Shantay meet with me in person to obtain his release from his commitment to the University of California. To this point, Shantay has not met with me regarding his release. I have supported Shantay since his arrival at Cal and will continue to do so in the future. Obviously, I am disappointed that he has chosen not to finish his senior year at Cal, as well as with the timing of his request.'

Legans, who would have been a senior for the Bears this season, averaged 9.0 points, 4.1 assists and 1.4 steals in three years at Cal, starting 79 of 95 games.

Despite his departure, the Bears return each of their top three scorers from last season's 23-9 squad that tied for second in the Pac-10 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament - forward Joe Shipp (14.8 ppg), guard Brian Wethers (10.3 ppg) and forward Amit Tamir (9.9 ppg).

In addition, five other letterwinners are back for another season, point guards A.J. Diggs and Donte Smith among them, and Braun has signed a four-player recruiting class that includes guard Richard Midgley, center Rod Benson and forwards David Paris and Jordi Geli Vilardell.
