Vendt Wins Silver In 400 IM At Pan Pacs
Aug. 25, 2002
Senior Erik Vendt (400m IM) and former Trojan Lindsay Benko (400m free) both won silver medals at the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships on Sunday (Aug. 25) in Yokohama, Japan.
Like he did at the U.S. Nationals two weeks ago, Vendt finished behind Michael Phelps in the 400m IM, who won in 4:12.48. Vendt finished just behind him in 4:13.15. The times both rank among the top 10 all-time performances at sixth and eighth.
As expected Phelps took the early lead, touching in 55.49 after the fly, almost two seconds ahead of the field. He extended that lead after the backstroke, before Vendt chased him down in the breaststroke. Vendt took a slight lead after 300 meters, touching in 3:14.23 to Phelps' 3:14.63, but Phelps took over again after 350 though by just. 04. He moved away in the final 50 for the win.
Benko won silver in the 400m free in 4:10.28, finishing behind Diana Munz (4:09.50). Benko also won a silver in the same event in 1999.
