Early season tournaments are under way for all Pac-10 teams this weekend. . . Last year's Pac-10 and NCAA Champion STANFORD sits atop both the USA TODAY/AVCA and Volleyball Magazine preseason polls at No. 1, with USC coming in a No. 3, ARIZONA at No. 6, and UCLA ranked No. 11 in the AVCA poll.

THE TOURNAMENTS - As usual, the season gets started with a plethora of tournaments. Nine Pac-10 teams will be participating in tournaments this week, with three schools serving as tournament hosts: Here's this week's tournament lineup:

In a vote of the Pac-10 coaches, here's how they picked the 2002 Pac-10 race to pan out (first place votes in parentheses):

No. 1-ranked Stanford was the first school to engage in preseason play, opening the season last weekend at the NACWAA tournament in Minneapolis, Minn. The Cardinal went 2-0, defeating No. 14 Northern Iowa, (30-19, 30-27, 30-19) on Friday, and putting away host Minnesota (30-21, 24-30, 30-27, 30-21) on Saturday.
