Bruins Ready To Begin

LOS ANGELES - A new-look Bruin women's volleyball squadwill open its 2002 season in a very familiarlocation,the 15th Hawaiian Airlines WahineClassic. UCLA has participated in every HALClassic.
The 2002 UCLA squad will look drasticallydifferent from the Bruins of the past four years,as three four-year starters (OH Ashley Bowles,OH Kristee Porter, Erika Selsor) completedtheir collegiate eligibility with the conclusion ofUCLA's tournament run last December. TheBruins do return three starters from last year'ssquad, along with sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman.
BRUINS RANKED IN PRESEASON POLLS
UCLA appears in preseason polls of both the USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top-25 andVolleyball Magazine.The AVCA coaches poll rank the Bruins 11th,while Volleyball Magazineplaces the Bruins 13th to open the season.During the 2002 season,the Bruins will face eightteams in the presason AVCA Top-25,and eight teams in Volleyball 's Top-20.Defending NCAAChampion Stanford is tops in both polls.

The Pac-10 pre-season coaches poll ranks UCLA fourth,behind Stanford,Southern California andArizona.As a conference,the Pac-10 has four teams in the USA Today/AVCA preseason poll (1.Stanford,3.USC,6.Arizona,11. UCLA and the same four (1.Stanford,3.USC,8.Arizona,13. UCLAin the Volleyball Magazine poll.
HEAD COACH ANDY BANACHOWSKI
Entering his 36th season on the Bruin bench, UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski remains oneof the top coaches in his profession.On Sept.1,2001,in Hawaii,he became the first collegiatewomen 's volleyball coach in history to record 900 career wins,and is just the second collegiatevolleyball coach for either gender to reach that milestone.UCLA men 's coach Al Scates,for whomBanachowski was a setter during his collegiate career,posted his 1,000th career win in February,2000.The first women 's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Famein Holyoke,MA,Banachowski currently has a career record of 919-221 (.806),and has coachedthe Bruins to six national championships,including three NCAA titles.
UCLA VS. HAL OPPONENTS
The Bruins open the 2002 Hawaiian Airlines Classic against Colorado having won the onlyprevious meeting between the two programs by a 3-0 margin on Nov.13,1992.UCLA has notfaced Ohio State since the 1999 season,when the Bruins and Buckeyes tangled at Pauley Pavilionin a second-round NCAA Tournament match,which UCLA won 3-0.UCLA leads the all-time seriesagainst Ohio State by a 7-1 margin.Hawai'i leads the all-time series with the Bruins by a slim 30-28 margin,although UCLA won both meetings between the teams last year:a 3-0 win in thechampionship match of the 2001 Hawaiian Airlines Classic,and a 3-1 victory in the NCAA RegionalSemifinal at Long Beach State on Dec.6.
NEXT WEEK FOR THE BRUINS
UCLA will travel to Minneapolis,MN,next week for the Diet Coke Classic on the campus of the University of Minnesota.The Sports Pavilion,which played host to the 2002 State Farm Classic lastweekend,will be the site of the tournament.UCLA will face Minnesota,Northern Iowa and RhodeIsland during the Friday-Saturday event.
