Sun Devil Cross Country Announces 2002 Schedule
Aug. 29, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - The schedule for the 2002 season of Arizona State cross country was released today with the Sun Devils set to compete in eight meets, including two held in Tempe. Walt Drenth, in his seventh year at the helm of the ASU men's and women's programs, feels this year will be another strong season for his teams.
'The meets I put on the schedule are either there to give some of the runners a chance for development or to prepare our elite group for the conference, regional and national meets,' Drenth said. 'Our primary responsibility is to compete well as a group at the championship meets. I feel we have a schedule that will give us a good idea early of what we need to work on so we will be better prepared at the end of the year.'
Among the scheduled events for the upcoming season is the Arizona State Invitational at Kiwanis Park Oct. 11. The Sun Devils also will run at Kiwanis Park one week earlier in the Canyon West Invitational (Oct. 5). On the road, ASU will participate in Notre Dame's Adidas Invitational (Sept. 6) and the NCAA Pre National meet held Oct. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind. Indiana State will host the national event five weeks prior to hosting the NCAA Championships, Nov. 25.
The Sun Devils will again travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational (Sept. 28) where the women will try to defend their title and the men improve on their eighth-place finish of a year ago. ASU's other two meets include a trip to UCLA for the Pac-10 Championships (Nov. 2) and the West Regional meet at Stanford (Nov. 16).
