Wes Whisler Named Top Prospect In Cape Cod Summer League

Aug. 29, 2002

Wes Whisler was named the top prospect in the Cape Cod Summer League in the recent publication of Baseball America.

The Bruin first baseman posted a .309 batting average with six home runs in 123 at bats during his season with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. The Freshman All-America selection did not see much time on the mound this summer as he 'felt a twinge in his elbow' in his lone appearance.

Whisler, who joined the squad late after spending time with Team USA Baseball early in the summer, beat out Tim Stauffer (RHP, Richmond) and Matt Murton (OF, Georgia Tech) for the honor, which is rarely bestowed on freshmen. He was also named the league's All-Star first baseman.

Baseball America writer Jim Callis stated that Whisler, 'had easily the most raw talent in the league.' He also commented that he 'doesn' try to overpower the ball and is a decent athlete for his size.'

Also honored by Baseball America was junior pitcher Chris Cordiero. Cordeiro was named the top pitching prospect, second overall in the Great Lakes League. He led the Northern Ohio Baseball Club to its third straight league title and earned All-Star honors.
