Arizona Soccer Blanks Drake In Season Opener
Aug. 30, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz. - Registering its first shutout victory in a season opener since 1997, the University of Arizona women's soccer team blanked Drake, 2-0, at home in the first day of the Wildcat Invitational on Friday. The win was Arizona's first season-opening victory since the 1999 season, while Drake, a first-year program, begins its inaugural season with the loss.
Wildcat freshman forward Lisa Kosena (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) registered the UA's first shot of the season in the 13th minute, a left-footed blast that was saved by Bulldog goalkeeper Kate Stack. The Cats racked up five more shots over the next 29 minutes before senior defender Tymarie Novak (Orange, Calif./Rosary Catholic HS) sent a bullet from 25 yards to notch Arizona's first goal of the 2002 season in the 43rd minute.
Arizona continued to bombard the Drake goal in the second half, racking up five more shots, then Kosena struck gold at 52:48 with her first collegiate goal. She took possession of a loose ball at the top of the box, turned and pushed the ball forward with just enough momentum to slip off the glove of a second Drake goalkeeper, Taryn Acosta.
The Wildcats went on to tally five more shots in the half, but the Bulldogs were able to prevent Arizona from finding the net again for the rest of the match. The Cats out-shot Drake, 20-7, and had an 8-5 advantage in shots on-goal. UA freshman goalkeeper Amanda Martin (Franklin, Tenn. HS) collected five saves and played all 90 minutes en route to her first collegiate shutout.
Kosena finished with a game-high six shots, including three on-goal. Fellow rookie Mallory Miller (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS) had three shots while junior Lindsey Greenwood (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley HS), sophomore Candice Wilks (Altadena, Calif./La Salle HS) and freshman Erin Clewett (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) each registered two shots.
Wildcat Invitational action continues on Sunday, Sept. 1, with Drake facing Detroit at 11 a.m., followed by Arizona versus Cal Poly at 2 p.m. Cal Poly logged a 1-0 win over Detroit in the tournament's first game on Friday night.
