Cal Volleyball Wins First Two Matches of Golden Bear Invitational

BERKELEY, CA - Behind the play of sophomore Mia Jerkov, the University of California women's volleyball team (2-0) won its first two matches of the Golden Bear Invitational, defeating Tennessee-Martin (0-2), 3-0 in the noon match (30-25, 30-19, 30-21), and Northern Arizona (0-2) in the 7 p.m. match (30-16, 30-13, 30-16).

In the other first day matches, San Jose State (2-0) defeated Northern Arizona, 30-23, 30-21, 21-30, 30-16 in the noon match and defeated Tennessee-Martin, 24-30, 30-28, 30-24, 33-31 at 5 p.m. The Bears will now face San Jose State in the championship match, Friday at 7 p.m., while Northern Arizona will take on Tennessee-Martin in the consolation match at 5 p.m.

Jerkov was spectacular, leading the Bears with 16 kills and 12 digs in the victory over Tennessee-Martin and then recorded a team-high 13 kills and seven service aces in the win over Northern Arizona.

Other top players for Cal in the Northern Arizona match were senior Leah Young (eight kills, two errors, 15 attempts) and sophomore Camille Leffall (seven kills, two errors, 12 attempts) with .417 and .400 hitting percentages, respectively.

In the season-opener versus Tennessee-Martin, freshman Alicia Powers had an impressive college debut, recording a .400 hitting percentage (eight kills, two errors, 15 attempts).
