MISSOULA, Mont. --- The Washington State soccer team opened its 2002 campaign by defeating Minnesota 2-0 in the first match of the Montana Diadora Cup Friday afternoon.

The Cougars received their first goal from junior midfielder Kim Morgan just four seconds before halftime.

'We had most of the run of play throughout the match,' Head Coach Dan Tobias said. 'We were glad that we got that goal because we had a lot of quality chances in the first half.'

WSU was able to put away the Golden Gophers at the 74:16 mark when freshman Haley Miller converted an assist by Nicole Wilcox. Both players scored their first points as Cougars on the play.

'Minnesota did a nice job putting pressure good pressure on in the second half,' Tobias said. 'We were happy with the result and it was a nice first game to build on.'

Junior goalkeeper Sara Leibowitz recorded the shutout, improving her career record to 5-1.

The Cougars meet Montana Monday, Sept. 2 in the final contest of the tournament. The two teams last met in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
