No. 22 Cal Drops Season Opener vs. Cal State Northridge, 3-0

No. 22 California (0-1-0) began its 2002 season with a 3-0 loss to Cal State Northridge (1-0-0) Friday afternoon at Sullivan Stadium at the Loyola Marymount Tournament.

The Matador's Daniel Paladini scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute assisted by Will Beard to give Northridge the advantage in the early part of the game. The Golden Bears kept it a close game until Josh Barton scored the Matadors' second goal in the 80th minute assisted by Brian Phillips. Beard helped out offensively once again, as he scored the third and final goal of the game in the 87th minute, assisted by Juan Guerrero.

Sophomores Carl Acosta and Mike Munoz led the Cal offense with two shots apiece. Munoz took the only shot on goal for the Bears. Senior goalkeeper Josh Saunders recorded two saves on the game.

The Bears next take on host, Loyola Marymount, Sunday, Sept. 1 at 3 p.m., at Sullivan Stadium.
