TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior Lisa Rutledge and newcomer Kim Glass helped the sixth-ranked Arizona volleyball team kick off its 2002 season with a 3-1 victory over UT-Arlington at the Louisville Labor Day Invitational on Friday. Game scores were 30-21, 27-30, 30-18, 30-27.
Rutledge led all players with 19 kills on 35 attempts. She also posted seven errors in the match, but still hit .343 for the victorious Wildcats. Glass, playing in her first match for Arizona, displayed an all-around game by posting 18 kills on 32 attempts with only three errors for a match-high .469 attack percentage. She also added six service aces, six digs and six total blocks in the win.
The Wildcats, who out-hit UTA .304 to .120 in the match, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead behind an outstanding .640 team hitting percentage in the opening game. The Wildcats tallied 17 kills on 25 attempts while recording just one error to open the season.
However, for as good as they were in the first game, the Wildcats struggled in the second. Arizona committed 10 hitting errors in the frame en route to a .098 attack percentage which resulted in a 1-1 deadlock heading into the break.
Coach Rubio, who needs just two more wins for his 200th at Arizona, righted things during the break as UA bounced back with a .414 attack percentage in the third game rout.
Individually, along with Rutledge and Glass, Shannon Torregrosa tallied the third double digit kill match of the evening. The senior belted home 13 kills while also chipping in with three aces and five digs.
UTA's Amber Pack led the Mavericks with 14 kills.
The Wildcats (1-0) return to play on Saturday with a pair of matches against American University and host Louisville. First serve for the Wildcats and Eagles is set for 7 a.m. Tucson time.
