Soccer Stays Undefeated With 2-1 Win Over New Mexico
Sept. 1, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - Two first half goals by freshman Brittany Cooper and junior Temryss Lane handed the Arizona State soccer team (1-0-1) a 2-1 victory over the University of New Mexico (0-2) Sunday night at the UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque.
Arizona State opened up the scoring in the first half with two goals in the 12th and 23rd minutes. New Mexico answered back in the second half on a goal with 8:12 left in the game, but was unable to equalize as time ran out.
'It was a great team effort,' noted ASU head coach Ray Leone. 'After the overtime match with Pepperdine on Friday, the team was a little tired, but they fought through it and came out with a solid win.'
ASU freshman and Albuquerque product, Brittany Cooper, was the first to get the Sun Devils on the board at 12:04. Cooper received a pass from the right side of the field that split the Lobo defense and was able toconvert on it for the goal. Sophomore Shawn Reynolds picked up the assist for ASU. Arizona State was able to pull away from the Lobos at the 23:33 mark when junior Temryss Lane broke through the UNM defense and slipped a shot past the Lobo goalkeeper.
However, 36 minutes into the second half of the game, UNM's Erchen Theys broke free in the ASU midfield and fired a shot that soared over the head of keeper Kelly Fitzgerald to make the final score 2-1.
The teams finished the match two points apart in the shots category, with the Sun Devils edging the Lobos 13-11. Cooper led Arizona State in shots with three and tied teammate Lane in points with two.
Up next, Arizona State travels to the Colorado College Tournament in Colorado Springs to take on the University of Denver on Friday, September 6 at 4:00 p.m. and SMU on Sunday, September 8 at 12:00 p.m.
The Sun Devils also may have back the services of freshmen Manya Makoski and Stephanie Ebner, who both just finished winning the 2002 FIFA U-19 World Championship in Canada with a 1-0 overtime victory over host Canada.
