ASU's Lightfoot Takes Leave Of Absence From Competition

Sept. 6, 2002

Wide receiver Daryl Lightfoot will take a leave of absence from competition for an indefinite period of time due to personal reasons, Arizona State University head football coach Dirk Koetter announced Friday.

Lightfoot, a sophomore from Phoenix, will continue to attend classes, practice and be a member of the football program.

'Daryl is going through several very difficult personal issues that are way more important than football,' Koetter said. 'It's been well-documented that he has had a tough year personally. We are supporting him in various ways and assisting whenever possible. His return to competing in games is not known at this time. We will welcome his return at the appropriate time.'

Separate from the leave of absence, Koetter had previously suspended Lightfoot for one game for a violation of a team rule.

'This suspension is totally unrelated to Daryl's leave of absence from competition,' Koetter said. 'They are two separate situations that converged at once.'
