No. 2 Bruins Defeat No. 5 Virginia on Golden Goal in OT

Sept. 6, 2002

Los Angeles - Bruin forward Kim Devine scored a golden goal eight minutes into overtime Friday, propelling the No. 2-ranked UCLA women's soccer team to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over No. 5 Virginia at the Second-Annual UCLA Women's Cup at Drake Stadium.

In the 98th minute of the match Bruin midfielder Sarah-Gayle Swanson hit a through ball up the middle to a sprinting Devine, who managed to beat two Virginia defenders and slip in a shot past UVA keeper Anne Abernethy to end the match.

After surrendering two early goals to the Cavaliers, one at the 30:42 mark by Noelle Keselica and another just eight minutes later in the 39th minute by Alyssa Benitez, the Bruins were forced to come from behind to gain the victory.

Down 2-0, UCLA did manage to gain some momentum heading into halftime, as Katie Rivera put in a Lindsay Greco cross in the 40th minute to cut the lead to one.

A little over five minutes into the second half, UCLA tied the game at 2-2 when Devine hit a hard shot off the post, hustled to get the rebound and blasted in her first goal of the match.

The Bruins then took the lead in the 71st minute of play when Greco flicked a header through the Virginia defense that ended up finding the feet of Rivera, who netted her second goal of the match, giving UCLA a 3-2 advantage.

Virginia was not done however, as the Cavaliers tied the game in the 76th minute of play when, following a UCLA foul at the top of the Bruin box, UVA defender Kelly Worden bended in a free kick from about 22 yards out, beating a diving Sarah Lombardo.

The score would remain tied until Devine's golden goal in the 98th minute of play.

UCLA, which moves to 2-0 on the year, outshot Virginia, 16-10. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 1-1.

In the first match of the day, USC upset No. 12 Penn State, 1-0.

The UCLA Women's Cup concludes on Sunday with USC taking on Virginia at Noon and UCLA facing Penn State at 2:00 p.m.
