Melissa Bennett Receives National Soccer Honors

Sept. 3, 2002

SEATTLE - Junior Melissa Bennett, who tied the Washington record with four assists Sunday, was named to the national Team of the Week Tuesday by both Soccer America and Soccer Buzz magazines.

Bennett tied the Huskies' single-game record established by Theresa Wagner in 2000. Despite the four assists, she is better known for scoring goals after amassing a Washington state prep record with 166 career goals at Seattle Christian High School.

'Melissa is absolutely capable of that,' Washington coach Lesle Gallimore remarked about Bennett's playmaking abilities. 'She is a good soccer player that knows how to win games by doing unselfish running and giving unselfish passes. That's definitely what she did all weekend for us. She was tremendous.'

Bennett had a goal and assist in Friday's season-opening 4-1 win over Arkansas.

Both national soccer publications name a Team of the Week, selecting 11 players who had the most impressive performances from the previous week's collegiate action. The magazines also include a brief comment regarding each player's highlights.

Soccer America's note on Bennett was the following:'Scores goal, assists on five -- helping Tina Frimpong and Kim Taylor to hat tricks, as Huskies roll past Arkansas and Colorado College.'

Soccer Buzz had the following comment about Bennett:'Busy offensive week with goal and assist in 4-1 win over Arkansas and four assists against Colorado College.'

Bennett and the 11th-ranked Huskies (2-0) travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. this week to participate in the Carolina Nike Classic. Washington opens with No. 17 Duke on Friday before meeting top-ranked North Carolina on Sunday.
