Cougars Take Soccer Battle Of The Palouse

Sept. 8, 2002

PULLMAN, Wash. --- Washington State fired 30 shots en route to a 2-0 shutout victory over Idaho at the Lower Soccer Field Sunday.

Leading the charge were juniors Nicole Wilcox and Kim Morgan, who each scored a goal and combined for 11 shots. Freshman Alix Rustrum also contributed to the Cougars' aggressive attack, launching seven shots.

'We are doing a good job of creating chances,' WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias said. 'We got a lot of them today and we didn't stick them, but we are learning from game to game.'

The Cougars got on the board early, receiving the first goal from Morgan at the 5:30 mark in the first half. Sophomore Megan Cecchini played the ball to Morgan, who blasted it past the Vandal defense from the top of the box. It was her second goal of the season.

Despite a succession of shots throughout the remainder of the first half and most of the second, Washington State didn't gain the coveted two-goal advantage until the 82nd minute, when Morgan and sophomore Keegan Hughes set the table for Wilcox.

'We fought our way to get that second goal,' Tobias said. 'Kim (Morgan) touched it to Nicole and sometimes that's all it takes.'

Wilcox, a junior transfer from Battle Ground, Wash., via Iowa State, received praise from Tobias for her versatility.

'Nicole has typically been a striker, but we have been playing her wide,' Tobias said. 'She has been working very hard and we keep telling her that the goals and assists will come.'

The WSU defense also had a solid day, allowing just three shots. Junior goalkeeper Sara Leibowitz recorded two saves and has yet to be scored upon this season.

'This was our first home game and we were very excited,' Tobias said. 'After three games this season, I think we are at a good point and we are looking forward to leaving Thursday for California.'

The Cougars, who improved to 3-0-0 with the win, meet Cal Poly Friday, Sept. 13, and face San Jose State to close the weekend tilt Sunday.
