No. 12 Penn State Shocks No. 2 UCLA, 1-0 in Double-Overtime
Sept. 8, 2002
Los Angeles - Penn State forward Christie Welsh scored on a breakaway in the 17th minute of overtime Sunday, giving the No. 12 Nittany Lions a 1-0 victory over No. 2 UCLA at the Second-Annual UCLA Women's Cup at Drake Stadium.
Welsh scored the game-winner at the 106:33 mark of double-overtime after receiving a perfect pass up the middle from forward Tiffany Weimer. Welsh also nearly scored in the 56th minute of the match on a similar breakaway, however Bruin keeper Sarah Lombardo made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
Prior to Welsh's goal, UCLA had several excellent scoring opportunities of its own, especially in the first overtime period. The Bruins' best chance came in the 78th minute of play when Penn State goalkeeper Amanda Brown came off her line to stop a shot by Bruin midfielder Sarah-Gayle Swanson. Swanson got another shot off the rebound, but Penn State defender Gillian Samuel managed to block the empty net and clear the ball away.
In the 98th minute, Bruin forward Iris Mora appeared to be brought down in the Penn State box, however no penalty was called.
Bruin forward Lindsay Greco and Welsh each finished with a match-high five shots.
With a 1-0 victory over Penn State on Friday and a scoreless tie against No. 5 Virginia on Sunday, USC wins the UCLA Women's Cup. The Women of Troy were the only team in the field without a loss, finishing 1-0-1.
UCLA, which falls to 2-1 on the year, travels to Hawai'i next week for matches with San Francisco on Sept. 13 and the University of Hawai'i on Sept. 15.
