Wildcat Soccer Pounds Northern Iowa, Wins Iowa State Cyclone Classic

Sept. 8, 2002

Ames, Iowa (Sept. 8) - Scoring three goals in a nine-minute span early in the second half, the University of Arizona women's soccer team pounded Northern Iowa, 5-0, to take the championship of the Iowa State Cyclone Classic on Sunday. The Cats improved to 3-0-1 on the year, their best record ever through the first four matches of a season. They won the tournament over Wisconsin by means of a goal differential tie-breaker.

Freshman forward Mallory Miller (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS) started the UA scoring barrage early, taking advantage of a free kick to score the first goal of the game from the top of the box in the fifth minute. In the 43rd minute, a pass by senior defender Tymarie Novak (Orange, Calif./Rosary Catholic HS) was deflected, but not enough, as freshman forward Maggie MacCool (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline HS) gained possession of the ball for a breakaway that put the Cats up, 2-0, at halftime.

Senior midfielder Naomi Chu (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) got things going early in the second half, taking a cross from freshman midfielder Nikki David (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) and making the game 3-0 in the 51st minute. Just four minutes later, Chu struck again, heading a cross from junior midfielder Lindsey Greenwood (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley HS) into the goal at 54:37. Greenwood capped the game with her first goal as a Wildcat, collecting a deflected Erin Clewett (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperaza HS) shot and denting the net in the 60th minute.

Arizona out-shot Northern Iowa, 20-1, and had 14 shots on-goal. Miller and Chu led all players with five shots apiece, and freshman goalkeeper Amanda Martin (Franklin, Tenn. HS) played just over 72 minutes of the contest without having to make a single save. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Natalie Juarez (Claremont, Calif. HS) came into the match with a little more than 17 minutes to play and preserved the shutout.

'Naomi Chu energized us on the attack, Amanda Martin had another solid game in-goal when we needed her, and Vanesha Bailey had her finest weekend as a Wildcat,' said third-year head coach Cathy Klein. 'Our offense is starting to put together good sequences, and we are improving and developing as a team. We took a lesson from the Wisconsin game on Friday and applied it to today's match, so we were more competitive in the second half and excelled at a higher level.

'I am very pleased with our weekend. Any time our team wins a tournament, it's exciting. We're very excited with how this tournament turned out for us. Now we just want to continue to focus on the development of our players and the team as a whole.'

Arizona dominated the All-Tournament team as well, with Amanda Martin, Naomi Chu, Erin Clewett and Vanesha Bailey (Las Vegas, Nev./Cimarron-Memorial HS) earning All-Tournament honors. Vanesha Bailey was named the tournament Defensive Most Valuable Player, and Naomi Chu was chosen the tournament Offensive Most Valuable Player.

In the midst of a stretch that will see them play five of six matches on the road, the Wildcats will play at Oklahoma next weekend on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m. CDT.
