Just 12 minutes into the game, Stanford got its best scoring chance when Alisan Pabon (Dallas, TX) played a cross to Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA), who's shot sailed high. Saint Mary's threatened 10 minutes later, but Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) jumped up and caught the Gael cross.
Stanford got on the board at 24:47 when Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) attempted to cross the ball, but was headed into the goal by a Saint Mary's defender for an own goal. After another scoring threat by Ward, the Cardinal held a 1-0 lead at the half.
The Gaels came out of the break and tried to score, but Barnhart made another fine play to stop a Saint Mary's shot. Stanford kept pressuring, including a near goal by Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) that was blocked by Gael keeper Ruth Montgomery. The Cardinal increased their lead to 2-0 when Carlson played a ball that was mishandled by Montgomery at 70:17.
Stanford added an insurance goal seven minutes later to go up 3-0. Carlson scored her second goal of the evening when she took a cross from Wallis and lifted the ball over the Saint Mary's keeper at 77:39.
