Volleyball Defeats North Texas, 3-0

DENTON, Texas -- The University of Washington volleyball team defeated tournament host North Texas, 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 20-25) this evening in day one of the Mean Green Classic.

The Huskies out-hit North Texas, .400-.189, to run away with the victory. Senior Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) led Washington with 23 kills, while adding six digs and three aces. Sophomore Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) also dominated the Mean Green at the net with 10 kills and six digs.

Senior setter Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) dished 53 assists, while libero Candace Lee (Eugene, Ore.) anchored the Husky defense with seven digs.

Washington's defensive unit also held North Texas' leading scorer, Corina Marginas to just 11 kills. Marginas was the only Mean Green player to score in double-figures.

The win improves Washington to 6-1, while North Texas drops to 2-8 on the season.

The Huskies have two games on tap tomorrow starting with Texas A&A- Corpus Christi at 7:00 a.m. (PST) and Louisiana Tech at 12:30 p.m. (PST).
