Volleyball Opens 2002 Home Schedule With Squad Scrimmage
Sept. 13, 2002
LOS ANGELES - The No. 2-ranked USC women's volleyball team (6-0) opened the 2002 home schedule with an intrasquad scrimmage Friday night (Sept. 13) at the Lyon Center. With two evenly divided teams, the Cardinal and Gold squads split a win apiece in the exhibition.
In game two, the Gold squad jumped out in front first thanks to three consecutive Cardinal hitting errors. The two teams paced each other for much of the game until a kill by senior captain Lauren Killian broke a 28-28 tie and led to a 30-28 Gold victory.
During the break between games, Haley addressed the crowd and welcomed Trojan fans for the 2002 season. Haley also introduced men's volleyball interim head coach Turhan Douglas who announced his 2003 men's squad. The men's volleyball season begins in January.
The match marked the first outing of the season for freshman middle blocker Bibiana Candelas. Candelas arrived on campus and began classes on Monday, Sept. 9, after having competed with the Mexican National Team at the Women's Volleyball World Championships in Dresden, Germany for the past three weeks.
The match also marked the return of junior middle blocker Kelli Lantz who missed the first six matches due to an ankle sprain she suffered one week prior to the start of the season.
The Women of Troy, who began the season on the road with six straight wins, will play one more exhibition match before resuming regular season competition. USC hosts the Czech Republic on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Lyon Center. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for kids and seniors and free for USC students and faculty.
