Volleyball Wins Mean Green Classic

DENTON, Texas -- The University of Washington (8-1) volleyball team defeated Texas A&M- Corpus Christi (4-7) and Louisiana Tech (7-5) in straight games to win the Mean Green Classic this afternoon. The tournament title is the second for the Huskies in 2002, who won the Best Western / Sycamore Inn Classic on Aug. 31.

The Huskies faced Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in game one and used a .385 hitting percentage to roll away with the victory (30-25, 30-14, 30-24).

Washington's Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) led all players with 15 kills while Kaitlin Leck (Carson City, Nev.) added eight kills and Darla Myhre (Victoria, British Columbia) chipped in seven.

On the defensive end, Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) recorded a team-high six digs and Danka Danicic (Ljig, Yugoslavia) added five. Myhre also had five block assists in the match.

In the nightcap, Washington used a .395 hitting percentage led by Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) with 14 kills and Benjamin with 13 kills, to capture the tournament championship (30-21, 30-17, 30-24).

The Huskies also used their jump serve to collected 14 aces, including five by Tomasevic and three by Benjamin to overpower Louisiana Tech's defense.

Candace Lee (Eugene, Ore.) anchored the UW defense with a match-high eight digs, while Maurer and Tomasevic each added four.

With today's pair of wins, Washington improves to 8-1 on the season. The Huskies have only lost three games all season, all coming to the hands of No. 3 Hawaii on Sept. 7.

Benjamin and Maurer were named tournament Co-MVPs for their performances in the three matches. Benjamin recorded 51 kills (5.67 kpg), while Maurer dished 135 assists (15.00 apg) to lead the Huskies.

Washington will return to action Sept. 19 as it makes its home debut against Oregon State at 7:00 p.m.
