OSU Tops Cal-Santa Barbara

Stacey Mescher and Lindsey Beem each scored goals for Oregon State in the first half at California-Santa Barbara, and the defense did its part in a 2-0 win on Friday in non-league women's soccer action.
Mescher's gave the Beavers (3-1-2) a quick 1-0 lead when the freshman corralled a rebound off an OSU corner kick at the 10:42 mark.
Lindsey Beem gave OSU its final 2-0 margin in the 29th minute, sending a free kick into the upper corner from 25 yards out.
Though UCSB (2-2-1) got off nine first-half shots, OSU keeper Jo Fletcher was only forced to make one difficult save in the first frame.
'We played well in the first half,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'The defense did its part today, and Fletcher only had to make one outstanding save.
'This was a good game for us; I was particularly pleased that we played the way we did even without Morgan (Crabtree) and Jill (Nicks). UCSB was a solid team,' Fennah said.Nicks and Crabtree were out with injuries.
Fletcher and the defense recorded their fourth shutout in six games, topping last year's total of three.
OSU returns to Corvallis to host the Nike Invitational Sept. 20-22 at Lorenz Field. OSU hosts Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sept. 20, and takes on the University of the Pacific on Sept. 22.
Oregon State, Oregon, Pacific and Wisconsin-Green Bay make up the field.
