Women's Golfers Begin Season at Oregon State

Sept. 16, 2002

The 2002-03 UCLA women's golf season begins today at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, OR, and the Bruins boast a young and talented team.

Eight letter-winners return from last year's NCAA West Regional championship squad, which lost just one player - senior Alicia Um - to graduation.

The Bruins welcome two newcomers this season in freshman Susie Mathews and junior transfer Hana Kim. Mathews is a veteran international standout from Australia and Kim boasts more than 65 collegiate rounds after earning two varsity letters at Northwestern.

Also returning for fourth-year Coach Carrie Leary are junior Gina Umeck and sophomore Yvonne Choe, each an all-conference selection last season. Junior Melissa Martin, who boasts more than 20 collegiate appearances, led the team last season in rounds played and earned all-conference academic honors.

Junior Saki Uechi, who has 41 rounds of experience, also qualified to play at the Bruins' opening event. She has three career Top 20 finishes.

Other returning letter-winners include: junior Bridget Dwyer, sophomore Charlotte Mayorkas, senior Vivan Phosomran, junior Krystal Shearer and sophomore Kristin Thompson.
