Bruins Fall to Olymp Praha, 3-1, in Exhibition Match

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Czech Republic team Olymp Praha in an exhibition match on Wednesday evening in the John Wooden Center. Game scores were 30-24, 30-27, 28-30, 30-24. Cira Wright and Heather Cullen both posted double-figure kills in the match, with Wright leading the Bruins with 12 and Cullen contributing 10.

The teams were evenly matched early in the contest, trading points to the 9-9 mark. Olymp Praha went on to hit an impressive .405 in the opening game of the match, on the way to the 30-24 opening game win. UCLA held a game two lead as late as 25-24, but were unable to hang on, falling 30-27 and trailing two games to none heading into the locker room.

In the third game, UCLA started quickly, opening an early 11-2 lead before Olymp Praha climbed back to tie the score at 14-14. The Czech team then extended to a 26-20 lead before the Bruins climbed back into the match with two separate three-point rallies, earning the 30-28 win. Neither team broke .100 in attack percentage for the third game of the match.

Game four saw Olymp Praha return to its hitting prowess from game one, recording a .412 team attack percentage in what would be the final game of the match. Two Brittany Ringel kills early in the game brought the Bruins to within one point at 10-9, but UCLA trailed throughout, eventually falling by a 30-24 margin to end the match.

Two Bruins, Wright and Cullen, posted double-figure kills with 12 and 10 apiece. Sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman recorded a team-high 17 digs, while Brynn Murphy and Angela Eckmier had three block assists apiece in the match. Murphy also recorded a match-high four aces on the evening.

UCLA returns to action on Friday night, September 20, in Tucson, AZ, when the Bruins open Pac-10 play at Arizona. That match will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on FOX Sports Net.
