Stanford Baseball Announces 2003 Schedule

Stanford, CA - Stanford Baseball has announced its schedule for the 2003 season. The Cardinal will open its 2003 campaign at Santa Clara on Saturday, January 25, before the Broncos return the favor for Stanford's home opener the following day on Super Bowl Sunday, January 26. Stanford will be attempting to extend its school record of College World Series appearances to five. The Cardinal was CWS runners-up in 2000 and 2001.Stanford's 2003 schedule includes 34 home games and 23 contests against teams that participated in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, including a three-game series at defending national champion Texas.
'It's a tough schedule once again, especially for a young team like ours,' said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. 'We have many challenging non-league games against many teams that will be highly ranked. Hopefully, that will help prepare us for a Pac-10 schedule that is always difficult.'
Stanford's schedule includes six games versus Pac-10 rivals USC and California. The Cardinal will host both teams in non-conference action with USC coming to The Farm for a three-game series February 28-March 2 and California trekking across the Bay for three games March 7-9. Stanford visits the Trojans for a three-game Pac-10 series May 2-4 and then travels to California for a three-game conference set May 9-11.
Stanford's four Pac-10 home series will be versus Washington (March 28-30), Oregon State (April 17-19), Arizona (April 25-27) and UCLA (May 16-18). Stanford's first Pac-10 action will come on the road in a three-game set at Arizona State from March 22-24. Stanford's other conference road series will be at Washington State (April 4-6).
Stanford will also host non-conference action against perennial powers Florida State (February 7-9) and Fresno State (February 14-16) in the first month of the campaign, as well as Cal Poly (May 23-25) to complete the regular season. Stanford's other three-game road series will be at Cal State Fullerton January 31-February 2.
Other regular season single home dates include Nevada (February 17), USF (April 1), Sacramento State (April 11), San Jose State (April 15), Santa Clara (April 29) and Saint Mary's (May 13). Other non-conference single game road contests are scheduled at Santa Clara (April 8) and San Jose State (May 6).
The Cardinal will also host a pair of exhibitions with an Alumni game scheduled for November 2, 2002, and a contest versus Rikkio University of Japan slated for Tuesday, February 25, 2003.
