No. 20 Washington State Sweeps Beaver Volleyball
Sept. 20, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - Four Cougar players registered double-figure kills as the No. 20 Washington State volleyball team swept Oregon State on Friday night. Game scores were 30-24, 30-27 and 30-21.
WSU's LaToya Harris had the only double-double for either team, hitting .387 with a match-high 14 kills to go along with 10 digs. Two other Cougars had 11 kills and a fourth one chipped in 10.
The Cougars (10-0, 1-0) extended their home court winning streak against OSU (5-5, 0-2) to 12 matches, with the Beavers last winning in Pullman in 1990.
'We hustled and played hard, but we have to find a lineup that can do that consistently. Game one was probably the best game we've played all year, but then we gave them a 10-2 lead in game three,' said coach Nancy Somera.
The Beavers hit an impressive .361 with 17 kills in that first game, only to see WSU counter with an even better .405 mark on 21 kills. OSU hit just .104 in game two, and a .056 effort in game three dropped them to a .167 hitting percentage for the night. The Cougars also slowed down a bit after game one but finished the match at .250.
WSU had 54 kills to OSU's 42, although the Beavers did come out on top in the battle of the Pac-10's top two defensive teams. OSU had 49 digs, led by Nikki Neuburger's match-high 11, with WSU finishing with 45.
