Volleyball Downs No.11 UCLA 3-1
Sept. 20, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz.- The 15th-ranked Arizona volleyball team opened its 2002 Pac-10 schedule with a 3-1 win over 11th-ranked UCLA Friday night in McKale Center. Game scores were 32-30, 26-30, 31-29, 30-23. The victory improved Arizona's record to 6-3 for the season and 1-0 in the Pac-10. UCLA fell to 7-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Led by freshman Bre Ladd's eight total blocks, the Wildcats put up a wall at the net to help them to victory. Arizona out-blocked the Bruins 16 to 4 in the match. Seniors Lisa Rutledge and Shannon Torregrosa and freshman Kim Glass chipped in with five blocks apiece and setter Laurie Gardner with four.
All four games of the match see-sawed back and fourth, as neither team led by more than six points at any point. Both UCLA and Arizona's longest scoring run was a string of five points, accomplished only once each. The two schools traded point for point, many coming off of service errors. The Bruins and Wildcats each posted 16 service miscues in the match. The Arizona block eventually proved to be the difference maker in the win.
Individually, Rutledge and Glass tallied 16 kills each on .371 and .282 hitting, respectively. Pac-10 Player-of-the-week Glass also finished with 13 digs in addition to her four block assists and one solo block. Gardner matched her season-high in dishing out 50 assists while also recording 11 digs. Libero Kelli Mulvany, subbing for the injured Rachel Williams, came up big for Arizona with a season-high 16 digs.
UCLA's Brittany Ringel led all players with a career-high 22 kills on .391 hitting. Heather Cullen and Cira Wright had 15 and 13 kills, respectively, for UCLA in the loss.
Arizona returns to action Saturday night with a match up with top ranked USC (7-0, 1-0). The meeting will be the first between the two schools since the Wildcats defeated The Women of Troy in last season's NCAA Regional Final match in Los Angeles. USC defeated Arizona State 30-20, 30-22, 30-27 in Tempe, Friday night.
