Bears Finish three-day Napa Valley Tennis Challenge
Sept. 22, 2002
St. Helena, Calif. - The Cal men's tennis squad finished up their first weekend of competition today, playing in the Napa Valley Tennis Challenge at Meadowood Resort. The three-day round robin event featured Cal and Arizona from the Pac-10 conference, Illinois from the Big-10 and Georgia from the SEC.
Seven players competed for Cal, including 71st ranked Balazs Veress, who was named to last year's honorable mention All-Pac-10 team. Veress went 1-2 in singles action, losing to the tournament's top-ranked player, No. 12 Amer Delic, and No. 88 Michael Calkins from Illinois. Veress and partner Robert Kowalczyk dropped both doubles matches on the weekend.
Kowalczyk put in a nice performance over the weekend in singles play, defeating Illinois' Delic and Georgia's Jason Varela before falling to Illinois' No. 39 Brian Wilson on Sunday. After losing to Wilson on Friday, junior Wayne Wong continued where he left off last year, putting in a shining performance by defeating Georgia's Stephan Timu, 6-1; 7-5 and Illinois' Chris Martin, 6-3; 6-2 in consecutive days.
Overall, the Bears finished 8-10 in singles competition and 2-4 in doubles action. However, the matches did not count toward team records.
Cal hits the court next, October 6-13, as they travel to Chattanooga, TN to compete in the All-American Championships.
