Cougars Get Back On Track With 8-0 Win Over Gonzaga

Sept. 22, 2002

PULLMAN, Wash. --- Nicole Wilcox and Alix Rustrum both equaled a school record Sunday by distributing three assists in Washington State's 8-0 win over regional rival Gonzaga at the Lower Soccer Field.

Both players tied the school record for assists in a single game, and both contributed to WSU's scoring outburst with goals. Rustrum began the attack at the 3:26 mark, converting on a pass from sophomore Christie Spear. The freshman from Wilsonville, Ore., would add another goal late in the second half. Wilcox all but sealed the match in the 24th minute with her fifth goal of the season.

'This was a solid overall team performance,' WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias said. 'We did it as a unit today, with each other, for each other, and that is a good sign.'

The Cougars attacked Gonzaga's goal early and often, totaling 33 shots while the Bulldogs could muster only four. Junior Rachel Rodrick led the charge with five shots, including one she turned into a goal at the 16:00 mark.

Rustrum wasn't the only player with a multiple-goal match. Senior Katrina Stroh knocked in two goals within five minutes of each other to bring her career total to 20.

'We talked about not hitting the panic button after Friday's game,' Tobias said of the 3-0 loss to Utah. 'That was a game that will make us better, and this will give us confidence going to California.'

Goalkeepers Sara Leibowitz and Katie Hultin combined on the shoutout. Leibowitz played the first half, while Hultin preserved the win with a save in the second stanza.

The Cougars also received quality bench play Sunday, receiving goals from freshman Carmen Anderson, the first of her career, and junior Jenna Wirtz, who put back a Rodrick shot in the 64th minute, the fourth of her career.

The win advanced WSU's record to 6-1-0, while Gonzaga dropped to 3-4-0. The Cougars travel to California to take on Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount next Friday and Sunday.

'They are both good teams,' Tobias said. 'There are no easy games, but we are just going to make sure we do a good job this week in training.'
