Cross Country Readies For Roy Griak Invitational

Sept. 24, 2002

Washington State University's top cross country runners head to Minneapolis for the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday...the men's 8k race begins at 10 a.m. PT and features Pacific-10 Conference teams from Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon...Wisconsin, fifth place finisher in last year's NCAA Championships, along with a host of other Big 10 schools, will also be challenging for the team title....the women run a 6k course at 11 a.m. PT, where the Cougars will race against 22 other Division I teams...the Cougars will battle Pac-10 power Arizona, who last year finished forth at the NCAA Championships, and also from the Pac-10, Arizona State and Oregon along with other Division I schools...detailed information on the meet can be found at

A team composed of senior Anna Blue, juniors Ana Cabrera and Hillary Smith, sophomores Molly Bull and Julia Corbett, and freshman Hailey Young will compete for WSU in the Roy Griak Invitational...the Cougar women have been training for the past two weeks and are hoping to get some good experience this weekend...Blue is looking to make a improvement from her time last year at this meet...many of the other Cougar women will also be looking for improvements.

The Washington State men, who looked impressive in winning their first meet of the year at Idaho, will be represented by seniors Kyle Barker and Mark Wicklander, junior Ian Johnson, sophomores Mike Heidt, Justin Ireland, and Danny Wolf, and freshman Reid Carrell...the last two weeks have been spent on training runs as the Cougars gear up for the race in Minnesota...Barker, who sat out the first meet of the season with a shin injury, is looking to make an impact this weekend as the Cougars try to topple some of the ranked teams at the meet.

'This meet, on the men's side there are about 30 teams and about 12 ranked teams and not quite as deep on the women's side so it is definitely good measuring stick to see if we are any good. I think our men are a team on the edge of being a ranked team and if we beat some ranked teams that will help them out. If you are a 'bubble,' an at-large team, to get to the NCAAs you have to beat some ranked teams throughout the season, starting this weekend.'

The Cougars take a weekend to rest up before hosting their own invitational, October 12, at the WSU Golf Course.
