In the Trenches with Kai Ellis

Senior defensive Kai Ellis cuts such an imposing figure -- 6-foot-4 and 250pounds, with arms so long they extend seemingly down to his knees -- it is nowonder that coaches and teammates alike refer to the Kent, Wash., native as'The Creature.' After struggling through knee injuries in 2001, Ellis hasemerged healthy this season, totaling 11 tackles, two sacks, an interceptionand a fumble recovery through the first three games. Recently, GoHuskies.commanaged to get the usually reserved Ellis to open up about what makes aCreature tick.
GoHuskies.com: What has been you favorite moment so far thisseason?
Kai Ellis: 'The Michigan game, because I had an interception. Itipped the ball with my left hand and as it was coming down I caught it offthe lineman's butt.'
GH: Touching a lineman's butt? That has to be just about the funniestthing that's happened to you all year.
Ellis: 'Actually, no. During the Michigan game, I head-butted BenMahdavi and my helmet got stuck on his. I took my helmet off and it wasstill stuck on his facemask.'
GH: If you weren't playing football, what would you be doing?
Ellis:'Coaching ... I just love to be on the football field.'
GH: If you could take a vacation right now, where would you go?
Ellis: 'Hawaii, because I have never been there and people alwaystalk about going there. It seems like a nice place.'
GH: Are there any athletes you would pay to watch?
Ellis: 'Jevon Kearse. He is the one guy I watch a lot; the guy I wearmy No. 90 jersey after. I try to model my game after his.'
GH: Do you have any superstitions?
Ellis: 'I wear my game uniform on Fridays before a game. It is saidthat you will win if you wear your uniform before the game.'
GH: If someone gave you a million dollars, what would you dofirst?
Ellis: 'I would put half of it in the bank and then I would buy acar.'
GH: What kind of car?
Ellis: 'I would buy a Cadillac Escalade, because it is big, it'stinted and it's got rims on it.'
GH: Where is your favorite place to play football?
Ellis: 'Husky Stadium, because of the fans and the atmosphere.'
GH: Who is the best player you have ever gone head-to-head with?
Ellis: 'I would have to say Bryant McKinnie, the offensive linemanfrom Miami. He can move really well and was tough to get around.'
