The BIG GAME Celebration at PIER 39
Sept. 26, 2002
San Francisco, Calif. - On Sunday, November 17 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. the public is invited to get in the Big Game spirit as PIER 39 commemorates the 20th Anniversary of 'The Play' at The Big Game Celebration at PIER 39. Made famous by KGO Radio's Joe Starkey, 'The Play' broadcast of the 85th Big Game is still a favorite of collegiate football fans. In 1982, it was in the final play of the Cal vs. Stanford Big Game when Starkey voiced his acclaimed broadcast of this memorable game.
An audio recording of Joe Starkey's 'The Play' broadcast will appropriately kick-off The Big Game Celebration at PIER 39, as the Cal and Stanford bands drum up enthusiasm, with cheerleader performances and mascots from both universities. Spectators will witness the spirited rivalry as the bands try to out play each other with a variety of boisterous fight songs and pep rally favorites. Cheerleaders will pose with visitors, while the Bears' loveable mascot Oski and the Cardinal's wacky tree dance about.
This free celebration takes place in the PIER 39 Entrance Plaza, in front of the 65-foot holiday tree adorned with thousands of ornaments.
KGO Radio, the station of Golden Bear broadcasts, will be at Hard Rock Cafe giving away great prizes.
