16th-Ranked UW Ties No. 3 Texas in Women's Soccer
Sept. 27, 2002
AUSTIN, Texas - Red-shirt freshman Kim Taylor netted the tying goal in the 50th minute Friday, helping the 16th-ranked Washington women's soccer team rally for a 1-1 tie against No. 3 Texas in a double-overtime contest at Myers Stadium.
Friday's game was the first of three straight meetings against top-10 teams for the Huskies (5-2-2) who visit No. 7 Texas A&M Sunday and No. 5 Portland next Saturday. The only teams to defeat Texas (5-2-1) this season were North Carolina and Stanford who are ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in this week's national rankings.
Washington won despite being outshot by a 31-13 margin. Senior goalkeeper Hope Solo, the 2001 Pac-10 Player of the Year, preserved the tie with a season-high 10 saves. Three of her saves came during the two 10-minute overtime sessions.
Texas goalkeeper Kati McBain produced five saves, four of them in the second half. Both goalkeepers registered a save during the final minute of regulation play.
The Longhorns opened the scoring two minutes after halftime. Katie McBain flicked a shot past the diving Solo and inside the far post off a cross from Kylee Wosnuk at 47:03.
Taylor responded three minutes later with the equalizer at 50:00. She blasted a shot just inside the post from 25 yards away for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Huskies hope for another opportunity to play at Myers Stadium this season as Texas is hosting the NCAA College Cup semifinal and championship games, Dec. 6 and 8.
