Waves Ride Past Cougars

Sept. 27, 2002

MALIBU, Calif. --- Pepperdine used goals by Ali Pavoni and Jenna Fodor in the 22nd and 89th minutes of the match to help the No. 18 Waves down Washington State 2-0.

'We did not play well in the first half,' WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias said. 'We allowed them too much time and space in the first half, and they were able to score with about 20 minutes left in the half off a corner kick that we didn't clear.'

Pavoni was the benefactor of the defensive miscue by the Cougars, with April Pettigrew and Ann Desmond providing the assist.

Despite the early goal, WSU goalkeeper Sara Leibowitz didn't allow another score for 67 minutes, when Fodor knocked in her fourth goal of the season to put the Cougars away. Leibowitz saved seven shots on the day, a career high.

'We played very well in the second half. We put a lot of pressure on them but just didn't do a good job in the final third. That was encouraging but we just came out kind of flat. They are a good team and they got in a good rhythm,' Tobias said.

Junior midfielder Kim Morgan led Washington State with two shots, both on goal. Rachel Rodrick, Nicole Wilcox, and Alix Rustrum each had one.

The loss drops Washington State's record to 6-2-0 this season, while Pepperdine moved to 7-0-2. Both of WSU's losses this season have come to top 25 teams. The Cougars will stay in the Los Angeles area and take on Loyola-Marymount Sunday at noon.
