Beavers Drop Hard-Fought Five-Game Match To Cal

Sept. 28, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State and California played a marathon of a volleyball match Saturday night at Gill Coliseum, with the Golden Bears eventually coming out on top in five games. Game scores were 21-30, 30-28, 30-25, 28-30, and 24-22.

OSU (5-7, 0-4 Pac-10) led 8-4 early in game five, but Cal rattled off four straight points to tie the game. The Beavers later led, 14-13, with a chance to win the match, but Jenna Brown's kill kept the Bears alive. A kill from Mia Jerkov then gave Cal (11-1, 2-1) its first lead of the game, but Megan McMillan responded with a kill of her own to tie the game yet again. Neither team was able to put the match away, with OSU missing five match-point opportunities and Cal failing to capitalize on its first two match-point chances.

The Golden Bears finally put the match to rest when Alexis Kollias was credited with a kill when her dig went over the net and the Beavers were unable to control the return.

'This one hurts a lot,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'We gave ourselves several chances to win this match, and we didn't capitalize.'

Allison Lawrence hit .418 with a career-high 26 kills, the most by a Beaver this year. OSU also saw solid performances from Katrina Nelson (season-high 17 kills, .382 hitting percentage) and Michele Solomon (13 kills, .379). McMillan finished with 15 kills to round out the Beavers in double figures. Cal also had four players in double figures, including Jerkov with 25 and Brown with 20.

'This was a great night for Ali (Lawrence). This was probably one of our best offensive performances this season,' Somera said. 'We played great. We just didn't win.'Cal narrowly edged the Beavers offensively, with the Bears hitting .280 with 86 kills. OSU finished with a season-high 85 kills and hit .253. The teams were even with 86 digs apiece, although OSU did hold the advantage in serving (11-6 aces) and blocking (13-9, giving OSU a season-high in that category).

Nikki Neuburger posted a career-best 29 digs, tying for the seventh-best single-match performance in OSU history. McMillan added a season-high 20, and Laura Collins chipped in 12. Cal had five players with double-digit digs, led by Jerkov's 26.

Amanda Eggert led the OSU blocking attack with a career-high seven blocks, the most by a Beaver this season.
