Duck Men's Golf Fifth After Two Rounds at Windon Memorial Classic

Sept. 30, 2002

GLENVIEW, Ill. - Chris Carnahan shot a 2-under 142 and Kyle Johnson was at even-par 144 to lead the Oregon men's golf team into fifth place after the first two rounds of the Windon Memorial Classic, played Monday at the 6,745-yard, par-72 Glen View Club in Glenview, Ill.

Carnahan, a redshirt senior from Albany, Ore., was tied for third with two other golfers, two strokes behind Northwestern's Tom Johnson. Carnahan opened with a 2-over 74, but closed with the lowest round of the day, a 4-under 68.

Johnson, a redshirt freshman from North Bend, Ore., who made his Oregon debut Monday, carded a pair of even-par 72s to stand tied for ninth with six other players.

'Chris had a great afternoon,' said Oregon head coach Steve Nosler. 'Typical of what you would expect out of a fifth-year senior. And I'm absolutely ecstatic about how Kyle Johnson is playing in his first college tournament.'

Host Northwestern took the first-day lead at 3-under 573. Duke was five strokes back at 578, followed by Stanford at 582, North Florida at 583 and Oregon at 584.

'We're not in bad shape,' said Nosler. 'We had a little trouble getting a fourth score in the afternoon, but I think we can make it up tomorrow.'

John Ellis, a senior from San Jose, Calif., was the only other Duck in the top 20, tying for 17th at 2-over 146. Another pair of freshmen making their Oregon debuts struggled to find consistency. Gregg LaVoie, a true freshman from Pasco, Wash., was tied for 42nd at 8-over after rounds of 72-80, while Sheldon High graduate Chris Dukeminier, a redshirt freshman, was tied for 59th at 13-over.

The final round commences at 6:30 a.m. PDT Tuesday.
