TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State outside hitter Juliana Escobar has been named Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 23-Sept. 29, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today from the conference office in Walnut Creek, Calif.
Escobar, a junior from Sobradinho DF, Brazil who was the AVCA Junior College Player of the Year at Barton County CC last year, recorded 20 kills (6.67 kpg) and 16 digs (5.33 dpg), both match highs. She also led the Sun Devils with three service aces in a 3-0 win over No. 12 Arizona (9/27). On the season, Escobar is averaging 4.66 kills per game, 3.12 digs per game and 0.84 aces per game. She has recorded six double-doubles (kills/digs) this year (out of ASU's eight matches), all of which have been 20+ kill matches.
In the upset win, Arizona State (6-2, 2-1 in Pac-10) broke a five-match losing streak against the Wildcats and won at home over their rivals for the first time since 1996. The three-game sweep was also the first time ASU swept the Wildcats since Sept. 30, 1994 and also recorded milestone win #500 for the program. The Sun Devils are 6-2 on the season and off to a 2-1 start in Pac-10 play. Appearing in the AVCA Top 25 poll for the first time since 1996, ASU cracked the poll at No. 24. ASU is 3-1 against ranked teams this year.
This is the first weekly honor for Escobar, Arizona State's 14th Player of the Week honor all-time. Former Sun Devil All-American Amanda Burbridge (1997-2000) was the last player to receive the honor (Oct. 23, 2000).
