UCLA won its sixth consecutive Pac-10 title, and 13th overall, with another narrow 160-157 victory over rival USC. It was the third consecutive championship in which the teams were separated by fewer than seven points. The Bruins were led by sophomore Lena Nilsson, the Pac-10 Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year, who took home individual titles in the 800 meters (2:03.88) and 1500 meters (4:20.81).

UCLA and USC turned in impressive performances at the NCAA Championships with a second and third place finish, respectively. STANFORD also made a Top-10 showing with an eighth place finish. USC's Angela Williams made history at the NCAA Championships as she became the first sprinter, male or female, to win four consecutive 100 meter titles. In order to do so, she had to edge out teammate Natasha Mayers at the tape (10.29 to 10.30). However, Mayers picked up her national title in the 200 meters (22.93). In all, eight Pac-10 athletes stood at top of the medal stand at the NCAA Championships. Along with Williams and Mayers were UCLA's Nilsson (1500 meters/4:12.60), Darnesha Griffith (high jump/6-0.00), Tracy O'Hara(pole vault/13-5.25), Jessica Cosby (shot put/57-0.25), Chaniqua Ross (discus/182-0), and Stanford's Lauren Fleshman (5000 meters/15:53.91).

UCLA freshman Monique Henderson was honored as the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year as she placed second in the 200 meters (23.04) and was the anchor on UCLA's first-place 4x400 meter relay team (3:31.97) at the Pac-10 Championships. Her season best time of 51.33 in the 400 meters ranks second on UCLA's all-time list, trailing Florence Griffith Joyner's 50.94 set in 1983.

UCLA's Jeanette Bolden claimed her sixth consecutive women's coaching honor and her eighth in the last nine years.
